Make sure your roof is in good shape

Giving your roof a good looking-over

Residential roofing in Charlotte, NC
Before winter begins in earnest, you should check your roof for signs of damage. Don’t climb on the roof itself — that’s dangerous, and some roofing materials, such as slate, can be damaged by walking on them. Instead, put a ladder against the house, climb up it and look at your roof from there. Do this in enough places that you can see your whole roof.

Check the outside of the roof for signs of sagging, and make sure there are no drifts of leaves plugging the roof valleys. Look at the shingles to make sure they aren’t cracked, warped or knocked out of place. Look over the metal flashing, and check the rain gutters for clogs, leaks or shingle granules. If there’s just a small leak in the seam of the gutter, fix it with a caulking gun.

Then go inside and check the attic. Look at the framing of the roof from below. If it’s raining, check for leaks and moisture.
