Metals and metal forms
Metal
roofing may be more expensive than asphalt or composite shingles, but it lasts
40 to 60 years, if maintained properly. Types of metal roofing include 5V
crimp, which consists of metal panels, and standing seam. Standing seam roofs
have long panels with seams running between them. This means it does not have
nearly as many potential leak points as a shingle roof, and because the seams
are slightly elevated above the roof panels, water won’t collect there. There
are ways of reinforcing the valleys to encourage even more water to run off
rather than pool.
Metals
often used in roofing are copper, 24-gauge steel (which needs a zinc coating to
prevent rust) and 0.032 aluminum. With the aid of paint and finishing, metal
can be made to look like shingles, tile or anything else, so even those who
prefer the look of a more traditional roof can still enjoy the benefits of
metal roofing.
