Shingles and what the sun
can do to them
Although
there are plenty of storms in a Charlotte or Concord, North Carolina summer,
what you really need to worry about at this time of year is the sun. The most
common area for sun damage to occur is on the south-facing side of the roof. Shingles
bulge and warp in the heat of the sun. This not only means possible leaks, but
creates a risk that a high wind will catch the warped shingles and blow them
off your roof. Every part of your roof, including the shingles, needs air
circulating around it. If there is a ventilation problem in your attic, or in
the insulation under your roof, the shingles will overheat.
Check
your shingles for blistering, buckling or curling. Look in the bottom of your
roof gutters for shingle granules, a sign your shingles are wearing out. Those
granules protect the shingles from ultraviolet light. When you need shingle repair done, look for a roofing company that has been in the area for a long
time and has many satisfied customers you can talk to. Try to find a company
that offers a free estimate.
