Questions and answers about
metal roofing
How popular is metal
roofing?
As
recently as 2012, nearly 10 percent of residential roofing was metal roofing.
This is a pretty substantial increase over previous years. Metal roofing works
well on roofs that are very flat or steep.
How much does it cost?
That
depends on the metal and the type of roofing. The least expensive roofing
metals are steel and aluminum. Galvanized steel can stand up to wind and hail
better, but aluminum is lighter and more rust-resistant. Copper is the most
durable, but it and zinc are the most expensive. Your contractor should have a
price list.
While
metal roofing will always cost somewhat more than asphalt shingles, it lasts 40
to 60 years if maintained well, compared to 20 years for asphalt. Repair costs
will be a lot lower. After a few decades, you’ll have recovered the cost of
installation just from avoiding the repair and replacement costs. A metal roof
will also boost your home’s resale value.
How much does it weigh?
About
50 to 150 pounds per 100 square feet. The lightest asphalt shingles weigh 200
pounds per 100 square feet, and shingles of higher quality weigh as much as
350.
